The “Star of Life” was designed by Mr. Leo Schwartz, EMS Branch Chief at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and registered as an EMS Trademark in 1977

The “Star” is a six barred star, blue on a white background and represents the six Primary System Functions of EMS.
